Press Release for Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum

Private gardens open again for Blithewold
~~~
Seven private gardens in Westport, MA, and a specialty nursery, will open their gates to the public on August 18th and 19th as Series II of GARDENS OPEN FOR BLITHEWOLD. This special garden event began in June with the overwhelmingly successful Series I - nine gardens in Watch Hill and Weekapaug, Rhode Island. If you missed those spectacular June gardens make it a point not to miss these August gardens as they reach their peak.
The soft rural greens of the beautiful harbor town of Westport contrast dramatically with the craggy beauty of Watch Hill. Water views also play a prominent role in the varied scenic make up of this area. The stunning backdrop to many of these beautiful gardens is the beautiful Westport River and surrounding marshlands, ponds and ocean. Gardening and horticulture are primary past times in Westport and visitors are often heard to comment on the gardens viewed from the road. A private garden tour gives you the opportunity to peek behind their garden gates.
The height of summer is a perfect time to see this series of seven very different and equally gorgeous Westport gardens. The selection of gardens encompasses a variety of garden designs - an Enchanted Cottage, built in 1808, rests on the shores of the Westport River and offers visitors an array of different plant habitats, many of which will surprise you, given the locale. You will visit an unusual and charming sunny moss garden, a plant collector’s garden crammed with an abundance of rare plants framed in a blend of English and Japanese design. A beautifully planted informal Adamsville garden will fill you with innumerable gardening ideas. You will get a rare opportunity to see an artist’s retreat furnished with many garden sculptures. Delight in a delicious vegetable garden, an airy meadow walk, a dappled woodland glade inspired by a potter’s dream, and return home with renewed gardening vigor, and many garden dreams.
An added bonus on this tour, for Friday the 18th only, will be the opportunity to visit Quansett Nurseries in nearby South Dartmouth. Quansett is a wholesale nursery specializing in New England grown plant material. It is not normally open to the public but visitors on this GARDENS OPEN FOR BLITHEWOLD tour will be able to purchase plants at wholesale prices.
All gardens will be open from 10 am to 4 pm, rain or shine. Advance purchase of tickets is $20 for Blithewold members, $25 for non-members, and $30 on the day of the tour. Tickets are limited so advance reservations are highly recommended.
